Hi, I am Laura Van Den Hurk. I have always run towards the opportunities to do the things no one wanted to do and to the opportunities where I got to learn the lessons and gain more skills. It has brought many rewards to me as it is how I went from the photocopy coffee girl to CFO, of a $40 million company, in 3 years at the age of 23-25 years old.
I stayed with that company for 15 years until it wound down. I was learning from all the functions of the business and was given room to practice and learn. My favourite part was learning how to pivot a company of different sizes as it changed over the years.
After being employed and having my boss of 15 years "renting me" out to his family, friends and colleagues, I got the idea to go on my own as self-employed and I worked the rest of my career hunting for inefficiencies and places to improve while doing the job I was hired to do. In my second "gig" I was faced with fraud and that's when I became certified. I didn't want to make any mistakes in this area.
I was able to apply my skills setting up and running our farm in 2013-2022. It was a challenge to "play" with my own money as I was more conservative and I felt more restricted in this area. I wasn't as aggressive in this area as I was working with other people's money. I learned a lot from Naked Acres Farmstead and my favourite part was Sales and Marketing. Not a regular niche for accountant types.
I have learned so many transferrable skills that I branched out my skills to writing a homeschooling plan in 2010 for our son with Autism, who had a laundry list of learning disabilities (I am READY to Learn is on my Resources page). I never looked at the I CAN'T side of things, but rather focused at what was possible with some hard work.

I have been fortunate enough to accumulate knowledge and experience in so many areas of business, farming and in a wide range of industries that it is time to share this with others. If my family did not have me, we would have been forced to spend money we didn't have just for professional help and advice.
I wanted to find a new way to share other than by kitchen tables and at work. I needed to create my own Business Consulting Model where I could help for free and still earn a living. I couldn't ethically charge my clients I was working with as they had fragile finances. So I created Client Partners as a role in my model. I had started out in my early design days of my model referring to Client Partners as Sponsors and that was a misnomer as it denotes a one way relationship. Client Partners represents the two way relationship that I want to have with people in this role. I ask Client Partners for a contribution and in return give them free hours with me as well as giving them access to some resources and some marketing.
Businesses are usually one of our biggest assets we own and they deserve to receive investments from us owners. I have seen too many businesses who expect so much from their asset and never giving anything back. It usually leads to profitability and efficiency issues.
